While not a particularly recent bit of news I felt the fact that no one else appears to have done an article on the subject quite troubling.
At the beginning of October, David Cameron announced that if he is re-elected in 2015, it is extremely likely that he will cut all benefits to the under 25's who are not, as he put it, "earning or learning". In his official speech he said "Today it is still possible to leave school, sign on, find a flat, start
claiming housing benefit and opt for a life on benefits. It's time for
bold action here." and that "Instead we should give young people a clear, positive choice: Go to school. Go to college. Do an apprenticeship. Get a job."
Now I am sure every single one of you guys sees the problem with this. Of the 1.09 million under 25's not in work or training, the number of them that intend to not bother getting a job is the minority. Out of all of you reading this post, is anyone considering such a lifestyle? I'm going to take a wild guess that every single one of you answered no. With this in mind it means that this 1.09 million, most of whom have benefits as their only lifeline from falling into absolute poverty, will suffer and absolutely nothing will change, at least not for the better. There won't be any more jobs or university placements available than before, just a heck of a lot more homeless under 25's.
I don't know about you guys, but come 2015 he's not getting my vote.
