BSkyB outdone by new boys BT
Most of us share passion for the lovely sport which is football. It's fair to say that the Champions League is probably the most talked about and appreciated tournament not just by beloved fans of participating clubs but also for the neutral fan too. For many years, Sky have been the main broadcaster of Champions League (UCL) football in this country providing us with special moments in footballing history such as the majestic Zidane volley in the final of 2002, the 23-pass goal conducted by Barcelona which is a record still standing today and the heroics of Jerzy Dudek's shin-pad in Istanbul for those few who actually are Liverpool fans.
However, change is beckoning as BT sports have bought the TV rights for all 350 fixtures each season as of 2015-2018 to the tune of £897m. That is £299m a season! When BSkyB were asked about why they gave up the rights for the UCL so easily, they simply replied that they did not feel that the rights were of that value. BT have stated their intent to challenge Sky as the home of sport broadcasting managing to pinch nearly half of the Barcalys Premier League fixtures for this season and the addition of all Champions League Football is sure to get more people subscribing to them.
As of now, if you are an existing BT broadband customer, you can have BT sports free of charge but I wouldn't be surprised to see that change unless their broadband prices inflate over the next year. For those of you who won't be able to enjoy that luxury, you will be happy to hear that BT have said that some fixtures will be 'Free view' although I doubt you will be able to watch the matches of higher seeded teams.
The Bottom line is Sky Sports are slowly losing all their prised assets and with football being the most popular sport in this country by a good country mile...
Are we about to witness the diminish of Sky Sports and possibly BSkyB too?
