Weekly Presentation on a Developing Country

The weekly presentation is your chance to be man for others: to stimulate, inspire and challenge others to think about an economic issue. For the remainder of this year, the presentation is to focus on a developing country, which I will choose for you.

In the presentation, you need to cover these main points:
  • what is the level of economic development; assess this using various indicators
  • what are the main problems this particular country faces in developing its economy
  • what are its development strategies (agriculture, industrialisation, tourism)
  • what are the issues surrounding external finance (debt, aid, trade and foreign direct investment)

Above all else, make the presentation interesting, colourful and entertaining.

Below are tips on where to find information:

Start with this site: The CIA's world factbook. It gives very detailed infomration about each country in the world, including all the indicators of development

Global issues such as poverty, globalisation and the environment

A datamapper from the IMF, which shows differnet data on a world map. This has nothing on the most fantastic gapminder

The Human Development Report from the United Nations examines a different issue each year as well as providing a lot of data on different indicators of development. It is here

The BBC does good profiles on each country and an overview of the history of the country. For example, China is here

For more of the same, but slightly more in-depth, there are these country profiles from the Economist. It is available here

An alternative view from the'New Economics Foundation' who have devised a 'Happy Planet Index'. The information is here
