Calories

Oh, how markets fail.  The negative externalities of obesity are huge; they are the additional costs imposed on the NHS.

Economics - as always - offers various solutions : taxing calories, banning fatty foods in schools, addressing asymmetric information by clearly labelling food with a traffic light scheme.


The photo above shows how behavioural economics is getting in on the act by nudging / encouraging people to take the stairs.
