Plugging The North-South Gap

The issue of the 'North-South' gap is a big issue in the UK. The issue is that the UK as a whole have become extremely reliant on London as its main breadwinner over the years. . As a result of London being a  lot more desired by tourists than places up north it receives more investment than all of the other cities in the UK. Many people believe that London 'strips the north' in terms of investment. Citizens of London benefit from nearly £650 a head where as the northern cities only receive £250 per head of public transport investment.

Many people believe it is unfair that London gets all of these 'privileges' with disproportionate grants to what the rest of the UK has to deal with. These people believe that the way that this is to choose one of its most powerful cities and attempt to invest heavily in this city to make it rival London. This City is said to be Manchester the reason for this is because it has the second highest productivity only behind London. The same  people say they would decentralize half of Whitehall to Manchester. This suggests that Manchester has potential to be one of the biggest cities in Europe. Although it would be good to invest in cities up North it can not be said that the investment in London is not worth it. The reason for this is because London alone contributes for 22% of the UK's GDP (£309.3 billion pounds). This is a big chunk of the GDP of England, so when considering the investment into Manchester the government will have to think about how much growth they will see and if it would benefit the UK in the long run.
