Crimea Indpendence: Illegal?

EU TO SET SANCTIONS ON RUSSIA

Vladimir Putin has signed a decree recognising Crimea as a sovereign state, This public and formal acceptance of the territory will lay down the foundations for an advance as they seek to welcome back these 'Lost Russians'. The decree comes after Sunday's referendum in which it was released that 97% of voters opted for Crimea to rejoin Russia.

However, the figures may not suggest the opinion of the majority as I am sure transparent ballot boxes had their part to play in the outcome. Also, the Tatar Muslims and Jews of the region did not partake in the voting process in fear of being attacked when leaving their homes.

It is clear that from the lowering of the Ukraine flag and the rising of a Russian one outside the Crimean parliament, this region seems adamant to acquire Russian citizenship.

However, was the actual vote legal? Putin has declared it was conducted in strict accordance with democratic principles and international law.

But was Ukraine made officially aware?
For this particular reason, the EU are set to pose economical sanctions on Russia should they act to move in to Crimea and control its borders. The referendum is said to have violated Ukraine's newly reforged constitution.

Why should Britons be scared?
The UK are to meet with G7 (usually the G8, but you know, Russia) to decide what further action needs to be taken. We all know that once the US declare some sort of military action on Russia, the UK will most definitely do the same thing fulfilling our role as America's needy best friend. This will probably end up with more unnecessary deaths in the Armed Forces for matters that don't really concern us.

Long story short, if Cameron attends that meeting; we're pretty much asking to get nuked.

Interesting opinion piece, Kenneth, but I wouldn't fear being nuked. We need Russia's gas, so the sanctions will be soft.
